...Ben had tears in his eyes, and I knew for sure that this man was going to make a special physician. He cared. Little did he realize then, that given the future of medicine, he was on a collision course when caring would crash with greed and deception... What Killed Doctor K.? reflects an insider's candid observations of the medical world from the 60's through the 90's.
This novel, based on real events, shows unflinchingly these years of major changes in the practice of medicine and the consequences for both patients and the medical professionals who serve them. Reader Reviews
“I cannot say enough about this book!! Often, one will read a book about a doctor and find a stylized representation of life outside of the practice and a series of contrived situations with which the doctor must contend. Not so in this book. As an avid reader, I can say that I have read a great many of these popular “medical” books, but none touch the mind like this one!! I have never before read of the inside of the medical practice like this. The author finally shines a light on the real life of the doctor, his hopes, dreams, wants, needs, and above all, feelings. So often we are regaled with the addictions of Dr. House, the mania of Hawkeye Pierce, the sardonic wit of Trapper John, and the hominess of Marcus Welby, yet for all of these, Dr. K is the most real. We can finally see that behind every great doctor is nothing more than a man, In this case, its a man that gives more of a damn about his patients than himself and sees them as real people rather than the revenue generating units that modern medicine has labeled them.
Thank you Barbara for letting us see the other side of the life of a doctor and truly showing us the man we all know and love.”
“This was clearly a case of abuse of authority and no due process. I would prefer a physician like Dr. K over those who are paid by HMOs that PAY physicians NOT to treat patients. The medical field is corrupt no longer about whats in the patients best interest! Its run by insurance companies that have put small doctors out of business. They find ways not to pay for what patients need deeming it NOT medically neccessay! They’re not doctors! They don’t have medical licenses! They didn’t study for 15 years! The medical board in this case had power that is as corrupt as the insurance companies. No true over sight! No fairness! Just a way to justify their own paychecks ironically what they accused Dr. K of! Thats called projection! I believe this life is a test. They failed miserably! One day they will be accountable to a higher authority and they will see, hear and feel every ripple effect of their decisions. It’s interesting that today genetic testing is being done to prevent disease not just do the minimal standards of care that this medical board simply dismissed in their witch hunt. God comfort this physicians family in losing their loved one too soon. A doctor who worked all his life to heal others and seems he never got the chance to enjoy the fruits of his labor and retire. I hope his family is comforted that he’s at rest in the arms of God. The author did a wonderful job in showing this man who was her partner in life to be a man of character, kindness and love. The love he left in his children and grandchildren will live on for generations. I can only hope this brings his loving and loyal wife some comfort.”
“This is a wonderful read and did not put it down until I finished it.
Being a retired RN I could relate with the many changes in healthcare over the years.”
